Institut Català d’Investigació Química (ICIQ) took part once again in the European Researchers’ Night, an initiative that brings science and research closer to the public through outreach and participatory activities.
On 25 and 26 September, Tarragona’s Corsini Square hosted the science workshop fair, which brought together more than 4,000 people and nearly 300 researchers from Universitat Rovira i Virgili and the CERCA research centres in the area, including ICIQ, the Institut Català d’Arqueologia Clàssica (ICAC), the Institut de Paleoecologia Humana i Evolució Social (IPHES) and the Institut de Recerca Biomèdica IRBCatsud.
ICIQ took part with four workshops that brought chemistry closer to the public in a practical and engaging way. The activities allowed participants to experiment with the chemistry of plants, sugar and electromagnetism, aromas and flavours, as well as discover Plàsticus, the game of the plastics of the future, a board game about smart plastics and the research being carried out at the institute.

ICIQ’s participation also extended to Reus, where on 21 September URV researcher and ICIQ associate researcher Dr. Carla Casadevall Serrano gave the science talk Reinventing Photosynthesis, as part of the outreach science talks held at Castell del Cambrer.
ICIQ’s participation in the European Researchers’ Night is part of the institute’s commitment to science outreach and bringing research closer to society. ICIQ regularly takes part in science fairs and activities aimed at diverse audiences, with experimental proposals that make it possible to discover chemical concepts in an accessible and engaging way.

About the European Researchers’ Night
The European Researchers’ Night is a public science outreach event held every year simultaneously in 300 cities across 30 countries in Europe. Since 2018, URV has organised this initiative in the Tarragona area, which has grown and become firmly established over these nine years and attracted thousands of people across the area in the previous edition. The aim of the European Researchers’ Night is to bring research and the people behind it closer to audiences of all ages and to showcase research and innovation in clear and accessible language.
