ICIQ strengthens its leadership in decarbonization by joining PTECO2

The Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) has officially joined the Spanish CO₂ Technology Platform (PTECO2) as a member. With this new partnership, ICIQ reinforces its commitment to researching innovative solutions to mitigate climate change through sustainable technologies, thus contributing to the European climate neutrality goals set for 2050. Júlia Viladoms, head of the Industrial Decarbonization Unit, will represent ICIQ on the platform.

The goal of PTECO2 is to promote collaboration between public and private entities for the development and implementation of carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies — known as CCUS technologies. ICIQ’s expertise in catalysis and sustainable chemistry will provide a valuable contribution to the advancement of a low-carbon economy. The institute is leading a strategic industrial decarbonization project that includes the construction of mobile pilot plants to test innovative CO₂ capture and utilization technologies. These units will enable Catalan industries to experiment with new materials and catalysts in pre-industrial environments, thus supporting the transition towards more sustainable and circular processes.

The overarching aim of PTECO2 is to promote technological development that helps reduce the environmental, social, and economic impact of greenhouse gas emissions. The platform is a private-sector-led initiative involving Spanish research centers and universities. It is partially funded by the State Research Agency (Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities) and includes participation from representatives of this agency, as well as from the Ministries of Industry and Tourism (MIT), and for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO).
