Institute of Robotics and Industrial Informatics (IRI)

The Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial (IRI) is a Joint University Research Institute participated by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) that conducts basic and applied research in human-centred robotics and automatic control.

The institute, founded in 1995, is a key player in the Spanish robotics and automatic control scenes, and a valued participant in a large number of international collaborations.

Current scientific objectives of the center include the analysis, design and constructions of robot mechanisms; perceptual and cognitive tools for advanced manipulation; mobile robotics and ubiquitous computing to enhance everyday human life activity; and the control and management of water and energy systems.

Key Facts of IRI

Prof. Carme Torras received the only ERC Advanced Grant in Robotics in the whole history of the ERC program in Spain.
12 ongoing European H2020 projects for a personnel of only 19 researchers with permanent position.
In 2018, the highest ever percentage of external competitive funding at IRI, with funds from European, national, and regional R&D projects.

The IRI’s added value of the SO-MM programme is to have a forum to analyse, discuss and promote ideas to improve the robotics science and technology in Spain and Europe, and to progress the communication with the government decision centres.

More than 20 years of high quality research position IRI as one of the robotics research centres of reference in Spain, and as a key player in the European scene for the transition of robotics from research to societal needs fulfilment. The María de Maeztu grant will allow us to consolidate IRI as an international reference centre in the field of human-centered robotics.
