PhD grant on " Beyond the Standard Model: New Particle and Dark Matter"

Application deadline:

The ICCUB is an interdisciplinary center with more than 60 long term scientists, 20 engineers and 80 postdoctoral researchers (55% international) and PhD students (30%international) offering an international and multicultural environment. The ICCUB also hosts a vibrant fundamental research program in cosmology, astrophysics and particle physics, with a strong technology unit supporting our participation in international collaborations in observational astronomy and experimental particle physics.

The Unit of Excellence Maria de Maeztu recognition was awarded to the ICCUB for the second time by the Spanish Government in 2020, as a center with a highly competitive strategic research programmes in the frontiers of knowledge. Thanks to this recognition, we have the opportunity to offer a PhD grant funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033:

- Beyond the Standard Model: New Particle and Dark Matter, PI Eugeni Graugés, Reference CEX2019-000918-M-21-2

The present data analysis from the LHCb experiment shows tensions between Standard Model (SM) predictions and measurements on several observables. A possible explanation is that those tensions are signs of contributions of new particles not foreseen in the SM, whose mass might be well beyond the reach of LHC center-of-mass energy for direct production, but nevertheless we can observe its effects on precision measurements. The PhD thesis funded by this grant will explore this possibility by increasing the data sample, and thus increase the present measurement precision, by using LHC RUN3 data, and disentangle the nature of the present data/SM-prediction tensions. If new particle contributions were to be found in the LHCb experiment data analysis, those could be clear candidates to take the role of Dark Matter (DM).

Applicants may be all those who are enrolled or admitted to a doctoral program for the 2021/2022 academic year, at the time of the application submission. Applicants may also be all those people who, at the time of the application submission, not being enrolled or admitted to a doctoral program, will be on the date the contract is formalized, in accordance with article 18.

Applications must be submitted online through this link,, of the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación from October 28 until November 11, 2021 at 2:00PM CET. To request the present research project please use the following reference: CEX2019-000918-M-21-2.
