Discovery of cell cycle duration gradient underlying root meristem development

Meristems is the engine of plant growth, where new organs are generated from stem cells. Until now, it was assumed that cell cycle length was homogeneous throughout this growth region. However, a new international study, led by the CBM and CBGP, reveals that the meristem development follows a gradient of cell cycle controlled by one of master regulators of stem cell activity PLETHORA.
