Head of the Genomics Core Unit at the CNIO

The Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) is one of Europe’s leading research institutions in the cancer research field. Located in state-of-the-art facilities in Madrid, Spain, the CNIO harbours at present more than 500 researchers working in both basic and translational aspects of cancer research, in a highly dynamic, energetic and international environment.

The CNIO is seeking for an experienced specialist in genomics to manage and lead a Genomics Core Unit providing support to CNIO Research Groups, focused on the implementation and application of genomic-based technologies to cancer research. The Unit is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation in the genomics field.

The main duties of the Unit Head would be:

• Provide scientific and technical advice to CNIO researchers in research projects requiring the application of deep sequencing technologies and any other approaches related to genomics analysis
• Provide support to CNIO researchers in the analysis of data derived from those technologies
• Implement or develop new technologies and methodological approaches in this area, integrating emerging genomic and precision medicine tools into the service portfolio
• Ensure that the Unit keeps up to date with the technological innovations in the field
• Propose and develop research projects aligned with the strategic interests of the CNIO, providing opportunities for the scientific and technical development of the Unit
• Take on all the administrative duties related to the management of the Unit and supervise the staff of the Unit, providing them the necessary training and coaching
• Evaluate and optimize all the processes related with the work of the Unit, providing troubleshooting and solutions to any issues
Applicants should hold a PhD degree in life sciences (biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or similar).
Requisites for the position include:
• Extensive expertise in deep sequencing technologies, including genome and exome sequencing, bulk and single-cell methodologies (RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq), spatial transcriptomics, variant analysis, metagenomics, epigenomics and genotyping tools (both mouse and human).
• Competence in bioinformatics pipelines for genomic data processing, as well as data management practices following FAIR principles.
• Excellent leadership and management skills, with previous experience in leading a core facility, dealing with administrative issues, supervising technical staff, optimizing workflows, and overseeing multi-user platforms.
• Creativity and innovative mindset to develop new protocols and methodologies
• Knowledge of quality management systems, with proven commitment to quality standards, data traceability, and regulatory compliance.
• Strong publication record in peer-reviewed international journals and experience delivering training to users and staff
• Excellent communication skills
• English fluency
