恭喜 Dr. Wang!

Hao Wang,  a PhD student under Prof. Ruben Martin’s supervision, has successfully defended his thesis today entitled “Site-Selective C–C Bond-Formation via Ni-Catalyzed Chain-Walking Reactions”

The members of the evaluation committee have been Prof. Cristina Nevado (University of Zürich, Switzerland), Dr. Francisco Juliá-Hernández (Universidad de Murcia, Spain) and Prof. Òscar Pàmies (Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Spain).

First, we will know more about yourself: where are you from, where and what you studied, your hobbies, and any other information you would like to include.

I am from China. I got my bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from Ocean University of China and master’s degree in Medicinal Chemistry from Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences. After that, I started my PhD at ICIQ under the supervision of Prof. Rubén Martín Romo.

What is your thesis about?

My thesis is about site-selective C–C bond-formation via Ni-catalyzed chain-walking reactions.

From the lessons learnt (or skills developed) at ICIQ, which one do you value the most?

Always ask “Why it is interesting?”

What ICIQ moment you’ll never forget?

La Castanyada.

What will you miss the most from ICIQ?

ICIQ seminars!

What advice do you have for someone who’s starting their PhD now?

English is important!

Who has been your biggest influence?

My supervisor Prof. Rubén Martín Romo, an expert in organonickel chemistry. We always get priceless suggestions from him.

What is your favourite molecule?

Artemisinin. Artemisinin and its derivatives are all sesquiterpene lactones containing an unusual peroxide bridge. Combination therapies, featuring artemisinin or its derivatives alongside some other antimalarial drug, constitute the contemporary standard-of-care treatment regimen for malaria.
