Four ICIQ laboratories achieve the highest level of accreditation under the international My Green Lab sustainability certification

The Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) has reached another important milestone in its commitment to more sustainable research. Four laboratories within the KTT Department have been awarded Green Level Certification, the highest level of recognition granted by My Green Lab, the leading international organisation dedicated to promoting sustainability in scientific laboratories.

The certified laboratories belong to the Medicinal Chemistry, Innovation and Valorisation—with two accredited laboratories—and Crysforma units. All successfully completed the programme’s rigorous assessment process and achieved its highest distinction.

This accreditation recognises the implementation of environmental best practices in the day-to-day management of laboratory activities and reinforces ICIQ’s commitment to conducting world-class research in line with the principles of sustainability.

My Green Lab certification is widely regarded as the international benchmark for sustainability in scientific laboratories. The programme evaluates a broad range of criteria, including energy efficiency, responsible waste management, water conservation, reducing the use of single-use materials, sustainable procurement, and the integration of environmentally responsible practices into everyday laboratory operations.

Scientific research plays a vital role in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, but it also requires significant resources. Initiatives such as My Green Lab help laboratories identify opportunities for improvement and encourage behavioural changes that reduce their environmental footprint without compromising the quality or excellence of their research.

Achieving this certification reflects the dedication and commitment of the participating laboratory teams. Over recent months, they have reviewed procedures, implemented new measures and embedded more sustainable practices into their daily work.

“Sustainability is no longer an optional aspect of research; it is an essential part of how we do science. This certification recognises the commitment of our teams to integrating environmentally responsible practices into their daily work and demonstrates that it is possible to pursue research excellence while reducing the environmental impact of laboratory activities,” says Xavier Blanch, Head of the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Unit and member of the Green ICIQ sustainability group.

This achievement further strengthens ICIQ’s position as an institution committed to sustainability and aligned with the evolving expectations of the international research landscape, where responsible practices and environmental stewardship are becoming increasingly important for both research organisations and funding bodies.

With these first four laboratories achieving the highest level of My Green Lab certification, ICIQ continues to advance its roadmap towards more sustainable science while establishing a model of best practice that can progressively be extended across other laboratories and activities throughout the Institute.
