Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) is pleased to welcome the participants of the 2026 Summer Fellowship Programme, one of the institute’s flagship initiatives for attracting young talent. The programme offers undergraduate students from around the world the opportunity to gain first-hand research experience by working alongside internationally scientists in a leading research environment.
Made possible through the support of the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI) of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU) under the ICIQ’s Severo Ochoa Excellence grant, the Summer Fellowship Programme reflects ICIQ’s commitment to scientific excellence, internationalisation and the training of future generations of researchers.
Each year, the programme attracts interest from students worldwide, with applications regularly approaching 1,000. Beyond providing an immersive summer research experience, the initiative plays a key role in ICIQ’s long-term talent attraction strategy. Many former Summer Fellows have subsequently returned to the institute to pursue Master’s and PhD studies, establishing the programme as an important gateway for recruiting the next generation of scientists.
“The Summer Fellowship Programme is one of our most rewarding initiatives,” says Prof. Antonio M. Echavarren, ICIQ Group Leader and Scientific Director of the Severo Ochoa Excellence Programme. “Every year, we are delighted to receive applications from outstanding students across the globe. More than a summer research experience, the programme provides an opportunity to inspire young scientists to continue their academic careers at ICIQ through our Master’s and PhD programmes.”
To mark the beginning of their stay, ICIQ held an official Welcome Day on 8 July 2026 at the Prof. Dr. Kilian Muñiz Auditorium.
The event began with an institutional welcome session for the Summer Fellows including presentations by Prof. Antonio M. Echavarren and Prof. Beatriz Prieto-Simón (member of the ICIQ Academic Committee). The session introduced participants to the institute, its research environment, the Severo Ochoa Strategic Plan and the training opportunities available throughout the programme.
