Industria Química highlights ICIQ’s contribution to the energy transition

Industria Química dedicates a detailed feature to the recent advances of the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) in the field of renewable energy. The article examines how materials chemistry and photoelectrochemical processes are generating new solutions to address the challenges of industrial decarbonisation and the energy transition set by the Fit for 55 package.

One of the central topics of the feature is the European project SUPERVAL, which is developing an integrated platform capable of capturing and transforming gases present in industrial emissions, in particular CO₂ and NOx, using solar energy as a renewable power source. ICIQ leads this initiative through the involvement of the groups of Prof. José Ramón Galán-Mascarós and Prof. Núria López, combining catalysis, materials design and molecular modelling to develop processes aimed at closing the carbon cycle.

In this context, the magazine highlights TAMOF‑1, a material developed at ICIQ and closely aligned with SUPERVAL’s objectives. TAMOF‑1 shows high selectivity for CO₂ and maintains stable performance under real conditions, making it an ideal candidate for treating complex gas streams such as those from post-combustion or biogas. Its ability to separate CO₂ efficiently and with low energy requirements positions it as a competitive alternative to traditional technologies and a key component within strategies seeking to valorise residual emissions or produce biomethane more sustainably.

The feature also showcases the latest advances from the group of Prof. Emilio Palomares in emerging photovoltaic technologies, particularly perovskite-based devices and DSSC solar cells. These contributions include improvements in perovskite stability through self-assembled materials, as well as the development of new organic dyes that achieve record voltages and excellent performance under indoor lighting, opening up new possibilities for integrating solar energy into low-power electronics and distributed devices.

Overall, Industria Química highlights how the research carried out at ICIQ is helping transform European climate regulations into concrete scientific solutions for a more efficient, competitive and sustainable industry.
