ICIQ will be showcasing how its cutting-edge research is transformed into technological solutions for the chemical industry at the next edition of Expoquimia, the international chemistry exhibition that will take place from 2 to 5 June at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via. With this participation, the centre reaffirms its mission to act as a connector and indispensable engine for transforming disruptive knowledge into real solutions to today’s major climate and energy challenges.
The ICIQ stand at Expoquimia is conceived as an open space and a dynamic meeting point. Innovative materials born in the institute’s laboratories will be exhibited, networking meetings with companies and a program of daily round tables will be developed. Various materials developed at the institute will be exhibited to show some of its lines of research with industrial potential. Among them, there will be samples of MOFs (metal-organic frameworks), a family of porous materials recognized with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2025 and that ICIQ has already patented and tested in industrial and commercial applications.
The space will also include samples related to renewable energies, such as photovoltaic panels and advanced dyes; and others related to the development of new biopolymers made from organic waste and CO₂.
With this deployment, the institute reaffirms itself as the ideal strategic partner for those companies and organizations that seek to incorporate cutting edge innovation and differential chemical solutions into their value chain.
“Cutting-edge science must move from the laboratory to the market. For this reason, for the ICIQ, the objective of this fair is to demonstrate in a practical way how the chemical technology that comes out of the research laboratories can be, in reality, the structural engine of the green reindustrialization of Catalonia and the keystone to maintaining European economic competitiveness in a demanding global environment”, says the director of the institute, Prof. Emilio Palomares.
A transversal program
During the four days of the show, the ICIQ will organize monographic debates on the major challenges of the sector at its stand (Hall 2, C13), featuring top-notch researchers, experts and representatives of successful companies and spin-offs :
Tuesday 2 June: The activity will start at 11:00 a.m. with the round table “Decarbonizing industry: challenges and opportunities from chemistry”, with the participation of Dr. Júlia Viladoms, head of the Industrial Decarbonisation Unit; Prof. José Ramón Galán-Mascarós, group leader; the postdoctoral researcher, Dr. Felipe Garcés and Dr. Stefano Giancola, from the spin-off of the ICIQ Orchestra. At 12:30 p.m., the round table on renewable energy “Chemistry for the energy transition: from the laboratory to renewables” will take place, a space for debate where the researchers Dr. Eugenia Martínez and Dr. M. José Hueso; Dr. Míriam Díaz de los Bernardos (representing the H2Cat network) and Dr. Alberto Bucci (CEO of the ICIQ spin-off, Jolt).
Wednesday 3 June: The focus will shift to the circular economy and molecular medicine. At 10:00 a.m., the round table on sustainable polymers “Sustainable catalysis: transforming the chemical industry of the future” will begin with Dr. Fernando Bravo, head of the KTT area; Prof. Arjan Kleij, ICIQ group leader; Dr. Georgiana Stoica and Dr. Coralie Jehanno, representing Polykey Polymers. At 12:00 p.m., the round table “The chemistry of the future of health” will take place with Dr. Jordi Cerón, head of the Crysforma unit; Prof. Beatriz Prieto-Simón, group leader; researchers Dr. Dani Font and Dr. Xisco Caldentey and Dr. Elsa Martínez, representative of Oniria Therapeutics.
Thursday 4 June: It will be a day marked by scientific dissemination and the recruitment of talent. From 10:00 a.m., the ICIQ stand will become a radio set with the broadcast of a special program of Tarragona Ràdio live. The space will have the participation of Prof. Luis Echegoyen, who will go through the microphones to talk in depth about the IVORI program.
Friday 5 June: At 10 a.m., the last round table “Digitalisation: transforming research and industry” will take place with Prof. Carles Bo, group leader; Dr. Silvia Planella, from the projects area, and Dr. Fernando Santos, from the Digitalisation unit, who will analyse the impact of artificial intelligence, computing and process automation on the design of new chemical research. At 12:00 p.m., there will be a demonstration of the SUPERVAL card game to learn about the carbon and nitrogen cycles.
Apart from the activity at the stand itself, the institutional presence of the ICIQ at Expoquimia will be reinforced with external forums. It is worth mentioning the participation of the director Prof. Emilio Palomares as a guest speaker at the conference “The future of chemical innovation in Europe”, an event that will take place on Thursday, June 4 at 12:00 p.m., together with the science communicator, Aythami Soto, in the Agora Smart Chemistry space. At the same time, the talk “From the laboratory to the productive ecosystem: technology and future” will take place at the ACCIÓ (Innovation Hub) stand, where will participate Dr. Júlia Viladoms as a lecturer. And finally, the ICIQ will receive the visit of a delegation of directors of the External Offices of ACCIÓ, who will meet with Dr. Fernando Bravo, head of KTT, to learn about the activity of the center.
With all this programme, the ICIQ reaffirms itself as the ideal connector to ensure that ideas born from excellent science successfully scale towards the industrial field, turning knowledge into a driver of economic competitiveness and global sustainability.
