To the Mothers of Science 2020 grant winners

The programme offers supporting grants and coaching sessions to talented BIST female researchers to recognise their roles as scientists and mothers, and to support them along their way to attaining positions of greater responsibility. This year’s winners come from all seven BIST centres. Malgorzata Siudek, Postdoctoral Researcher at IFAE, obtained one of the grants.

The IFAE-ATLAS group at the ICHEP conference 2020

The ICHEP conference is taking place online from Tuesday 28th July until Thursday 6th August. Most members of the IFAE-ATLAS group are participating and attending various of the many sessions. Several new ATLAS analysis results carried using the full Run 2 data and mainly or entirely by members of IFAE.

Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech, the spin-off of the UB, the BSC and the IFAE, pioneers quantum computing in Europe

A team of researchers led by Prof. José Ignacio Latorre (UB), and including Dr. Pol Forn Díaz (IFAE), and Dr. Artur Garcia (BSC), have created Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech SL , a spin-off of the UB, the IFAE, and the BSC.

IFAE 2015-2019 scientific production in Portal de la Recerca de Catalunya

The Portal de la Recerca de Catalunya (PRC), opened to the public in January 2017, aims to visualize and disseminate from a single place the research activity carried out in Catalonia. The portal is an initiative of the Secretaria d’Universitats i Recerca (CSUC). All CERCA centres are now included in the PRC. Deep Detection featured in La Vanguardia

[Deep Detection](https://www.deepdetection.tech/), the spin-off company created from the LINDA project in the innovation program The Collider (Mobile World Capital Barcelona) was featured in the “Start-Ups” section of [La Vanguardia](https://drive.google.com/open?id=1r_qhDydZ830ZKJ9pz__Jan9gVhGht5NQ&authuser=sgrinschpun%40ifae.es&usp=drive_fs). Mokhtar Chmeissani and José Gabriel Macias are the entrepreneur scientists of the project.

Virgo and LIGO unveil new and unexpected black hole populations

Virgo and LIGO have announced the detection of an extraordinarily massive merging binary system: two black holes of 66 and 85 solar masses, which generated a final black hole of around 142 solar masses.

IFAE joins the VIRGO collaboration

IFAE just became a new member institution inside the VIRGO collaboration. This opens a new long-term research line in IFAE related to GWs detection using terrestrial interferometry.

LIGO and Virgo Announce Four New Gravitational-Wave Detections

The LIGO and Virgo collaborations have now confidently detected gravitational waves from a total of 10 stellar-mass binary black hole mergers and one merger of neutron stars, which are the dense, spherical remains of stellar explosions. Six of the black hole merger events had been reported before, while four are newly announced.

Final Agreements Signed for CTA’s Southern Hemisphere Site in Chile

On 19 December 2018, the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) and the European Southern Observatory (ESO) signed the final agreements needed for CTA’s southern hemisphere array to be hosted near ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile.
