Postdoctoral position in the Earth Observation group at ICE-CSIC
The Earth Observation group at the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) in Barcelona offers a postdoctoral position in the field of remote sensing of precipitation. In particular, the candidate will work on the synergistic use of GNSS Polarimetric Radio Occultations in combination with passive microwave (PMW) observations of heavy precipitation, with the aim to better characterize the vertical structure of precipitation and assess and improve the assimilation of such techniques into NWP models. These activities will require the candidate to work with observational data, but also to perform simulations of atmospheric fields (e.g. using WRF) and simulations of the required observables (e.g. using Radiative Transfer tools).
The candidates should have a background in physics, mathematics, meteorology, or equivalent.
The candidates should have experience with scientific programming using Python and shell scripting with Linux operating systems.
Experience with simulations and observations of precipitation related phenomena will be strongly valued.
Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
The interested candidates should contact Ramon Padullés (padulles@ice.csic.es) with a short CV (maximum 4 pages), or any further inquiry about the position.
The appointment is linked to a project that ends on March 2027.
The position will remain open until filled, but initial screening will start on April 20th.
Start date: as soon as possible.
Gross salary: 35.000-41.000 € / year, depending on experience.
We are looking for a candidate with previous experience with a PhD in the field. All education degrees (e.g. B.Sc, M.Sc., PhD) have to be recognizable to the Spanish system, and must be ready prior to starting the position (we can provide help and guidance for the homologation of titles, if needed).
About the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC)
The Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) has been distinguished with the María de Maeztu Excellence Seal, as one of the top research centers in the country. Their areas of research vary from engineering applied to several space missions to fundamental physics and cosmology, from high-energy astronomy to theoretical astrophysics. ICE-CSIC is part of the "Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas" (CSIC, the Spanish National Research Council). CSIC is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe. The Institute is also affiliated with the Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya, (IEEC).
ICE-CSIC strives to build a culturally diverse community of researchers, dedicated to contributing to an inclusive environment. We encourage, in particular, applications by women and members of minorities.
ICE-CSIC is located in a modern building on the Campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in Bellaterra, just outside Barcelona. The Campus is well served by public transportation (railways and buses), and a variety of accommodation options can be found both in Barcelona city center and in the smaller towns close to the University Campus (Cerdanyola, Sabadell, Terrassa, Sant Cugat, Sant Quirze, Rubí, and others).
