Context And Mission
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) is seeking a machine learning coordinator to join the Earth Sciences department within the framework of the AI Factory initiative.
The AI Factory is a major European project aimed at accelerating the adoption and development of artificial intelligence across industry sectors that is deploying a comprehensive set of AI-focused services, including robust training, networking, and innovation support structures. Its mission is to foster the uptake and effective use of AI, particularly among SMEs and startups across participating countries, and to strengthen the European innovation ecosystem. These services are powered by the AI-specific partition of the MareNostrum5 supercomputer, one of the most advanced infrastructures in Europe, designed to meet the evolving AI needs by harnessing the latest AI-oriented computing technologies.
As the AI Factory coordinator in the Earth Sciences department, the selected candidate will oversee the implementation and strategic alignment of AI services related to climate science. This includes supervising use cases, managing collaborations, and ensuring seamless integration of software tools and workflows within the MN5 AI partition. The Coordinator will serve as the main liaison between scientific teams, technical experts, and AI Factory partners, ensuring that AI services meet user needs while remaining aligned with broader project goals.
Key Duties
Act as the main point of contact for internal and external users, including researchers, software developers, project partners, and external collaborators such as public organisations, SMEs, and start-ups.
Lead the documentation and the software used in the AI factory in collaboration with the AI factory technical coordinator.
Supervise the integration and availability of AI software tools, frameworks, and data on the MN5 AI partition.
Collaborate with the BSC AI Factory coordinator and contribute to project reporting, dissemination, training, and strategic planning activities.
Collaborate with BSC technical teams and external partners to ensure operational support and performance of AI workloads.
Lead and coordinate the AI Factory activities related to use and test cases within the Earth Sciences department.
Identify opportunities for new collaborations and support the growth of the AI Factory user base in climate science.
Requirements
Education
Master’s or PhD in computer science, data science, climate science, or a related field.
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
Experience coordinating complex, multidisciplinary projects, ideally in a scientific or technical environment.
Familiarity with AI/ML workflows, tools, and infrastructure (e.g., HPC systems, AI Libraries, MLOps practices).
Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
Knowledge of climate science and an atmospheric or ocean modelling background will be valued.
Experience with Earth System Models and knowledge of their data formats will be valued.
Experience in managing a large technical project and knowledge of project management and software cycles, including Agile and Scrum methodologies, is recommended.

Ability to work collaboratively across teams and institutions in an international context.
Ability to take initiative, prioritize, and work under set deadlines.
Fluency in spoken and written English.

The position will be located at BSC within the Directors Department

Duration: 3 years
Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
